A biogas plant is a type of anaerobic digester used to manage different farm wastes and energy crops. It can be constructed with air-tight tanks having various structures. Maize, sewage sludge, and food waste are some of the biodegradable materials that can be fed as input to the plant. During the process, micro-organisms convert the biomass waste into biogas (mainly methane and carbon dioxide), as well as digestate. By combining wastewater from beer factories with cow whey, an increase in production of biogas by 2.5 times compared to biogas produced from brewery water alone was achieved.
It is not recommended that biogas be created using intentionally planted maize as this practice is deemed unsustainable and damaging to the soil due to the concentrated, intense nature of these plantations.
Anaerobic Digestion (AD) has long been used to transform wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) into water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs), pushing them beyond the traditional management of wastewater. This process results in a byproduct, usually called “waste gas”, which is used to create biogas - a renewable, clean, green energy source. Certain facilities are even capable of using biogas to generate enough renewable natural gas (RNG) to put it into a pipeline for distribution, as well as sending power back to the grid.
Despite the advancements made in some areas while adapting Anaerobic Digestion, the basic process remains the same since it was introduced in the early 1900s. When a tank is filled with primary and secondary sludge, the anaerobic digestion process can start up quickly - its microbes just need an oxygen-free, homogenous, and warm environment, and about 15-20 days to digest the solids and create biogas.
However, for this process to work the tank needs to have the correct equipment in place to keep it COVERED, MIXED, and HEATED. This is very important, as selecting the wrong cover, mixer, or heating system will only result in an inefficient process, leading to various challenges and even potential catastrophic failure.

Food waste has become a major global environmental issue, and it is estimated that 14% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from food production and waste. Of the food waste created, many come from straw, chicken farms, cattle farms, pig farms, and other livestock farms.
At livestock farms, a huge amount of food waste is produced from food that is discarded from the animals or food that has spoiled since it was not preserved correctly. This waste takes up a large proportion of the total global food waste and has a serious negative impact on the environment.
Food waste from these farms has a direct impact on climate change, as decomposing organic waste releases methane and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, thus contributing to global warming. Livestock farming also has an indirect effect on global warming by taking up a lot of land in order to produce the food they need for their animals, which reduces the amount of land available for carbon capture.
Given that food waste from livestock farms is directly or indirectly creating some of the largest contributors to global warming, there are initiatives being worked on by world governments and researchers to reduce and eventually eliminate this waste in order to combat climate change.
