A biogas plant is a form of anaerobic digester that treats farm wastes or energy crops. It is typically made of air-tight tanks with varying configurations so that it is able to function properly. The matter to be digested can vary widely, from energy crops such as maize silage to sewage sludge and food waste. As these organic matter breaks down it releases biogas (predominantly composed of methane and carbon dioxide), as well as a digestate.
If other organic materials are added to the mix when processing the biogas, the production rate can be increased significantly. For example, by injecting 10% cow whey into 90% wastewater from a brewery, the biogas production was increased by a factor of 2.5 compared to just wastewater.
Although energy crop biogas projects have been embraced for their sustainability, in some cases, their implementation is actually unsustainable and damaging due to the concentrated, highly intensive and soil eroding agricultural approach.
Anaerobic Digestion (AD) has long been integral in the evolution of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) into water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). It is credited with generating biogas, an environment-friendly renewable energy, from the produced “waste gas”. In some advanced facilities, biogas has been used to provide power to the grid as well as natural gas to the pipeline.
Despite the modern advancements, the setup of anaerobic digesters largely remains unchanged since its inception in early 1900s. A tank with sludge serves as the platform for the anaerobic digestion process, which sees microbes breaking down solids and producing biogas in an oxygen-free, homogenous and warm environment over a period of 15-20 days.
For optimal efficiency and performance, the tank needs to have a COVER, a MIXER, and a HEATER. Choosing the correct type of cover, mixer, and heater and implementing them effectively eliminates the prospects of poor performance and mishaps.

In recent years, there has been an increasing awareness of food waste in the world. A significant part of this food waste is generated at the production level of agricultural products, including straw, chicken farms, cattle farms, pig farms, and other livestock farms.
These farms provide essential income for farmers and help to provide food for people around the world. However, there is a growing need to reduce the amount of waste associated with food production. This is essential for agricultural sustainability and has far-reaching impacts on the environment.
A variety of initiatives are being implemented to reduce food waste, such as reducing how much food is being produced and utilizing more efficient methods to process and ship food. These changes will help to minimize waste and help create a more sustainable agricultural industry.
