A biogas plant is a type of anaerobic digester that is designed to process the waste from farms or energy crops. They are air-tight tanks that are constructed in various shapes and sizes and accept incoming energy crops and biodegradable waste materials such as sewage sludge and food waste. This anaerobic process is fuelled by micro-organisms which cause the biomass to be converted into biogas, which consists mainly of methane and carbon dioxide.
The production of biogas increases significantly when energy crops are co-digested with wastewater from various industries. For example, when 90% wastewater from a brewery is mixed with 10% cow whey, the biogas produced was 2.5 times larger than when the wastewater was used alone.
However, there is much debate regarding the manufacturing of biogas from maize. This is because it is seen as unsustainable and damaging due to the very intense nature of these plantings, which can lead to soil erosion.
Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is an essential part of transforming wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) into water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). Traditionally, byproducts of this process have been termed "waste gas"; however, they can also be converted into renewable and clean energy sources, such as biogas and renewable natural gas (RNG). In some cases, facilities are able to generate the power necessary to export RNG into pipelines and/or send back to electric grids.
Despite the advances in AD technology, the basic design of these digesters to treat wastewater has been the same since the early 20th century. Essentially, a tank full of primary and secondary sludge is all AD needs in order to get started. The only other requirements are an oxygen-free and homogenous environment, and enough time - 15 to 20 days - to permit the microbes to thrive and decompose materials inside the tank, thereby producing biogas.
To help ensure that the AD process runs efficiently and withoutprocess hiccups or catestrophic equipment failures, the tank needs to be COVERED, MIXED, and HEATED accordingly. The right type of digester cover, mixing, and heating systems need to be selected and used properly.

The rapid growth of food waste, straw, and various livestock farms is putting an enormous strain on the environment. For instance, chicken farms, cattle farms, pig farms, and other livestock farms are increasingly producing emissions, from the methane gas created by decomposing food scraps and manure, to the carbon dioxide created by the animals themselves – primarily from the carbon cycle of vegetation consumed by the livestock, and farted out by the animals. Such emissions from livestock farms are contributing to global warming, and this is further exacerbated by the gas released by burning of straw and other material which has been left over from the animal rearing.
By collecting and removing these leftovers, we can prevent further pollution to the environment and prevent the ongoing effects of global warming – and increase even more. There is already progress toward this end, with some farmers in many countries taking the initiative to change their practices, such as implementing methane capture systems, investing in renewable energy sources, and using other techniques to minimize their environmental footprint.
