Biogas plants, also known as anaerobic digesters, are designed to take farm wastes or energy crops and convert them into biogas (methane and carbon dioxide) and digestate through the use of micro-organisms. In these plants, the energy crops may include maize silage and biodegradable waste such as sewage sludge and food waste.
The production of biogas can be substantially increased when wastewater is co-digested with other residuals from the dairy, sugar, or brewery industry. For instance, when 90% of wastewater from a beer factory is mixed with 10% cow whey, biogas production will be increased by 2.5 times.
That being said, manufacturing of biogas from intentionally planted maize has been found to be unsustainable and have a negative impact on the environment due to the soil eroding effects of such plantations.
Anaerobic Digestion has played a crucial role in transforming wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) into water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). Formerly known as "waste gas", the byproduct is now used as biogas - a renewable, clean, and environment-friendly energy source. Furthermore, some of these facilities have even managed to generate a sufficient amount to distribute renewable natural gas (RNG) into a pipeline and/or send electric power back to the grid.
Unfortunately, since the early 1900s, the fundamental configuration of anaerobic digesters for wastewater treatment has stayed approximately the same. With some primary and secondary sludge, a tank can initiate the anaerobic digestion process. However, the incoming microbes require an environment that is free of oxygen, homogenous, and mild, and roughly 15 to 20 days to break down solids and produce biogas. To ensure this condition is met, the tank must be COVERED, MIXED, and HEATED.
By properly selecting the appropriate type of digester cover, mixer, and heating system, it decreases the likelihood of inefficiencies, process issues, and destructive breakdowns.
