A biogas plant is a form of anaerobic digestion which processes farm wastes or energy crops such as maize silage into biogas. It is constructed in an air-tight tank with varying configurations and is fed with both biodegradable wastes and energy crops.
Once the biomass is introduced, the micro-organisms break down the materials and transform them into biogas, typically consisting of methane and carbon dioxide, as well as digestate.
Further amounts of biogas can be generated by co-digesting wastewater with substances from the dairy, sugar, and brewery industries. Studies have demonstrated that mixing 90% wastewater from beer factories with 10% cow whey significantly increases the amount of biogas generated, more than doubling the amount founded with the wastewater from the brewery only.
However, the production of biogas from purposely planted maize has been challenged due to its soil eroding and overly concentrated properties.
Anaerobic Digestion has been essential in transforming wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) into water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). The bi-product, historically termed as “waste gas”, today is acknowledged as biogas – a sustainable, clean, eco-friendly energy source. Some plants have produced sufficient biogas to input renewable natural gas (RNG) to a pipeline, and/or to dispatch power back to the grid.
However, despite improvements in certain fields, the fundamental set-up of anaerobic digesters for wastewater has stayed nearly same since early 1900s.
It takes little to kick-start the process of anaerobic digestion in a tank with some preliminary and secondary sludge. The incoming microbes merely require a no-oxygen, harmonious, lukewarm setting and about 15-20 days to develop, decompose solids, and generate biogas. To occur, the tank needs to be COVERED, MIXED, and HEATED.
Choosing the correct type of digester covering, mixer, and heating system, paired with effective utilization of the equipment, reduces the risks of inefficiency, process troubles, and disastrous breakdowns.

Food waste is an alarming phenomenon that needs to be tackled seriously. According to recent statistics, a huge amount of food is wasted every year, mostly due to careless and inefficient storage by commercial enterprises. In addition, we cannot ignore the environmental issue caused by the straw used to feed animals, as well as livestock farms such as chicken, cattle and pig. The unseen cost covers air pollution and land degradation, as well as the escalating use of fresh water by livestock producers.
We should take proactive steps to address the problems caused by these farming methods. The agricultural industry needs to restructure itself by developing more efficient and sustainable methods of production, such as those that use low emission technology, in order to reduce the amount of emissions as well as runoff of manure into local waterways.
Governments also have a role to play in setting regulations and providing incentives that encourage long-term, sustainable and responsible farming practices. There are federally subsidized programs that encourage responsible farming practices in livestock production, and local ordinances that limit the pollution of local waterways caused by runoff from agricultural activities.
In conclusion, we must take action to address the serious environmental issues caused by food waste, straw use, and livestock farming. Governments, businesses, producers and consumers all have a role to play in the process of creating a more sustainable and healthier world for us all.
