A biogas plant is a facility used to produce biogas from feedstocks such as energy crops, farm wastes, or biodegradable wastes. These feedstocks are digested in air-tight tanks known as anaerobic digesters. During the digestion process, micro-organisms transform the feedstock into biogas, which is primarily composed of methane and carbon dioxide, and a digestate byproduct.
The production of biogas can be directly increased by co-digesting wastewater with other residuals such as those from the dairy, sugar, or beer industries. For instance, when 90% wastewater from a brewery and 10% cow whey were co-digested, the biogas production increased by 2.5 times compared to using wastewater from the brewery only.
There has been some criticism of biogas plants that use energy crops such as maize for fuel, as their production is viewed as unsustainable due to the soil-eroding nature of such concentrated and intense plantations.
Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is an essential part of modern wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), transforming them into water resource recovery facilities (WRRFs). Through AD, what was once called “waste gas” is now used to generate biogas, a renewable, clean and green energy source. Some WWTPs have been known to generate enough energy to send renewable natural gas (RNG) into a pipeline and/or send power back to the grid.
In spite of the advances made in some sectors, the fundamental AD design for WWTPs remains more or less the same as it did in the early 1900s. Starting AD within a tank, with the necessary primary and secondary sludge, is a relatively simple matter. All that is needed is an oxygen-free, homogenous environment, with an ideal temperature of between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius, for the microbes to survive and thrive, breaking down solids and producing biogas.
In order to complete the AD process, the tank must be COVERED, MIXED, and kept at a steady HEAT. The right choice of cover, mixer and heating system is essential, and effective use of this equipment can help to reduce the chance of any inefficiencies, process challenges or serious failures.
