Anaerobic reactors are designed to sustain an oxygen-free environment, and their construction is relatively simple compared to aerobic reactors. These reactors have higher loading rates and are more tolerant of toxic and organic substances than aerobic reactors. Methanogens, specialized bacteria for supporting anaerobic reactions, tend to form immobilized granules in the bottom of the reactor as a sludge. One example of an anaerobic reactor is the UASB reactor, which relies on biofilm grown on carrier particles that is fluidized by the feed stream for mixing the microbes.

An anaerobic fluidized bed is also available, in which the biofilm is suspended in the carrier particles, and maintain a stable condition with energy provided by the feed stream.
